Professional Practice:
uilding a rewarding career in nursing requires more than just finding a job you love; it involves a continual state of learning and growth - both professionally and personally. In this section, we would like to cover basic legal information about nursing law and ethics, as well as encourage your participation in the leadership of the profession.
As a licensed healthcare professional, it will be your responsibility to stay informed about nursing laws, the Nurse Practice Act for your state, and liability issues. On Nursing Law, we've posted some court cases where nurses were found negligent, held personally/financially liable - and in some cases, lost their licenses to practice. We've also compiled a list of links to online versions of the Nurse Practice Acts for each state. Finally, we've included some insightful information on liability insurance, and how much coverage you will need.
The foundation and continued growth of the nursing profession is vitally dependent on the leadership and participation of its members. The active involvement of all nursing professionals will serve to unite and strengthen the field. There are many ways you can get involved, from working with national organizations on nursing legislation, to mentoring students and new nurses (you can also get a mentor for yourself, too!):
